Give Feedback on Russell Road-Route 1 Study
Online presentation and survey now available

QUANTICO – The Virginia Department of Transportation is offering a virtual update and comment period on potential improvements being evaluated for the Russell Road and Route 1 interchange near Marine Corps Base Quantico.

In lieu of an in-person presentation, VDOT invites residents and travelers to learn more and share feedback from home. Learn more about draft alternatives that have been developed for the Russell Road and Route 1 interchange by viewing the online presentation.

The presentation, survey and more study details are available at virginiadot.org/russellroadstudy. Comments can also be sent to [email protected] or to Mr. Clinton Smith, P.E., VDOT Transportation Mobility and Planning Division, 1401 E. Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

The potential improvements to the Russell Road and Route 1 interchange include:

Intersection of Russell Road and Ramps West of Route 1

  • Adding a traffic signal, improving safety by widening all intersection lanes to 12 feet, and eliminating the existing westbound Russell Road merge west of the intersection.
  • Adding a traffic signal, providing a free-flow right-turn lane from eastbound Russell Road to southbound Route 1, and widening Russell Road from two to four lanes between I-95 and the bridge over Route 1.

Intersection of Russell Road and Ramps East of Route 1

  • Adding a traffic signal, constructing a second left-turn lane from northbound Route 1 to eastbound Russell Road, and widening Russell Road from two to four lanes.
  • Adding a traffic signal, building a new ramp from northbound Route 1 to eastbound Russell Road, and widening Russell Road from two to four lanes.
  • Installing a Continuous Green-T signal (allowing continuous eastbound traffic along Russell Road), constructing a second left-turn lane from northbound Route 1 to eastbound Russell Road, and widening Russell Road from two to four lanes.

This study is being completed through VDOT’s Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program that aims to identify cost-effective measures to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Please note that this study does not set construction dates for any improvements, but develops proposed improvements that localities can pursue for funding and consider including in their comprehensive plans.

The final study is expected to be complete and posted online later this fall.
