VDOT SEEKS SOLUTIONS TO ROUTE 664 DELAYS
Several truck incidents have blocked Nelson/Augusta County road
LYNCHBURG-An increase in truck traffic on Route 664, Reed’s Gap Road in Augusta County and Beech Grove Road in Nelson County is creating issues for motorists and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is looking into immediate and long-term solutions to address this issue.
Due to the sharp and blind curves of the roadway, along with rock embankments large trucks are hanging up at several locations. In addition, these trucks must use both lanes to negotiate some of the curves.
In recent years, VDOT has widened pavement and improved shoulders along several sections of the road; however, some trucks are still becoming stuck.
Currently, there are signs in Augusta County advising tractor trailer drivers that GPS (global positioning system) routing is not advised. Similar advisories are now displayed on digital message boards on the Nelson County side of the route; permanent signage containing these advisories will be place in soon.
Long-term, VDOT, will conduct a traffic study and, with input from local law enforcement, as well as the counties of Augusta and Nelson, determine what the best solution is to prevent further incidents.
