NEW BRIDGE ON ROUTE 601 OVER DIASCUND CREEK OPENS TO TRAFFIC
Crews complete replacement of bridge to Hicks Island

JAMES CITY COUNTY – On Friday, Nov. 17, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) opened the newly constructed bridge on Route 601 (Hicks Island Road) over Diascund Creek for motorists traveling to and from Hicks Island in James City County.

The previous one-lane, steel girder bridge on Route 601 (Hicks Island Road) was replaced with a new, wider one-lane bridge with improved capacity and bridge approach.

Bryant Structures, Inc., headquartered in James City County, was awarded the $3,397,506 construction contract, which began in late 2022. Remaining construction activities include the removal of the temporary trestle bridge used for traffic during construction and placement of final roadway paving, anticipated to be completed in early 2024, weather permitting.
