CONSTRUCTION SET TO BEGIN ON RICHMOND ROAD (ROUTE 60) SIDEWALK AND BIKEWAY IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT IN JAMES CITY COUNTY
Project designed to improve pedestrian and bikeway connectivity in Norge

JAMES CITY COUNTY — Construction is set to begin this month on the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Sidewalk and Bikeway Improvements Project, designed to add capacity to the pedestrian and bikeway network on Richmond Road in the Norge section of James City County.

The project, starting as early as July 18, will improve bikeway and pedestrian access on the portion of Richmond Road (Route 60) between Croaker Road (Route 607) and Old Church Road (Route 1607) to support the nearby residential and commercial areas. These improvements will ensure sidewalks meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance standards for width, slope and curbing, and connect into existing and future pedestrian infrastructure along Richmond Road.

The project includes:

  • Construction of new wider and ADA compliant sidewalks on the north side of Richmond Road, from the intersection of Croaker Road to Norge Lane; and on the south side of Richmond Road, from the intersection of Norge Lane to Old Church Road.
  • Construction of a new roadway bike lane on the north side of Richmond Road, from the intersection of Croaker Road to Norge Crossing Shopping Center.
  • Addition of a pedestrian crosswalk with upgraded traffic signal at the intersection of Richmond Road and Norge Lane to accommodate pedestrian crossing on Richmond Road.

During construction, motorists can anticipate daytime shoulder closures with intermittent single lane closures along Richmond Road to accommodate crew work along the shoulders. Richmond Road is expected to remain open to traffic throughout the duration of the project. Access to all business and residential properties will be maintained at all times.

VDOT awarded the $1.6 million project contract to J.S.G. Corporation of Williamsburg in late 2022. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2024. All construction work is dependent on weather conditions and subject to change.
