CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation is responding to a snowstorm beginning to impact the Commonwealth.  Flurries started mid-morning Friday in parts of the Culpeper District and at mid-afternoon it is snowing across most of the state.

The storm will linger through the night into Saturday morning for some areas. Forecasts call for one to three inches in much of central and western Virginia, but the Hampton Roads region and Eastern Shore could see up to six inches or more.

The snow is expected to fall at a rate of about half an inch an hour and will be light and powdery which could hamper visibility as it falls.  The wind will also pick up in the overnight hours so crews will be out to clear trees and other debris that may block roads. The high winds may cause blowing and drifting on Saturday.

If you do not have to travel, the best advice is to stay safe and warm at home.  But if you must get out, please be mindful of VDOT crews on the job, and give them plenty of room to push accumulating snow off roadways.  Remember, even though roads are brined, drivers could encounter icy spots, especially on bridges, overpasses, ramps and crossovers.

VDOT reminds residents to park off the road to allow plows to clear the road ahead. Avoid parking in the street or in cul-de-sacs to make it easier for snowplow drivers when plows head to your neighborhood.
